Course Overview

This course introduces students to selected engineering concepts, computational tools, and professional practices used in engineering fields. Students will begin by using Excel to perform calculations, organize data, create graphs, apply formulas, use logical functions, and solve basic engineering problems.

The course then transitions to MATLAB or GNU Octave, where students will learn introductory programming and computational problem-solving skills. Topics include variables, arrays, matrices, plotting, curve fitting, input and output statements, conditional programming, and loops.

Students will also explore engineering professional ethics and the importance of safety, accuracy, honest reporting, and responsible technical communication. The course concludes with an introduction to AutoCAD and engineering drawings, where students will learn how technical drawings communicate dimensions, features, and design intent.

Because this is a 1-credit course, weekly activities are focused, practical, and skill-based. The course includes short quizzes, software-based lab activities, brief reflections, mid-term and a final exam.

Course Objectives

By the end of this course, students will be able to:

Apply a structured engineering problem-solving process to basic technical problems.
Use Microsoft Excel to organize data, perform calculations, apply formulas, and use built-in functions.
Create and interpret basic Excel graphs, trendlines, and data tables for engineering-related applications.
Use Excel matrix and logical functions to solve introductory engineering problems.
Use MATLAB or GNU Octave to create variables, arrays, matrices, and simple scripts.
Apply MATLAB or GNU Octave commands to solve systems of equations, create plots, perform curve fitting, and complete repeated calculations.
Write simple MATLAB or GNU Octave programs using input, output, conditional statements, and loops.
Explain the importance of engineering ethics, safety, accuracy, and professional responsibility.
Identify basic AutoCAD tools and drawing elements used in engineering drawings.
Create or interpret a simple engineering drawing with dimensions, labels, and clear technical communication.
